Can you pay rent with the American Express Cobalt in Canada?

Most landlords don't take Amex, but rent platforms do. Here's what the Cobalt actually earns on rent and whether the fee is worth paying.

The short answer

Yes. Chexy accepts American Express, so you can pay rent with the Amex Cobalt. Rent earns the base 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar, not the 5x food rate. It is roughly break-even against a ~1.75% fee unless you transfer points to Aeroplan or use rent to reach the monthly welcome-bonus spend.

Which platforms accept the Cobalt

Chexy accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Always confirm current card acceptance in the platform before you set up a recurring payment.

What the Cobalt earns on rent

Rent doesn't fall in the Cobalt's bonus categories, so it earns the base rate of 1 point per dollar. On $2,000 rent that's about 2,000 points a month. Valued at around 1 cent as a statement credit, that's below the fee; transferred to Aeroplan at 1:1 and used for good flights, points can be worth noticeably more.

Where rent really helps: the monthly bonus

The Cobalt's first-year welcome offer is typically paid month by month when you hit a monthly spend threshold. Rent can make that threshold automatic. Check the current offer on the card page for exact numbers.

When it makes sense

  • You're in your first year and need rent to hit the monthly welcome-bonus threshold.
  • You transfer Membership Rewards to Aeroplan or other travel partners for high-value redemptions.
  • A platform is running a reduced-fee promotion.

When another card is better

If you just want straightforward value on rent, a card with a recurring-bill or higher base earn — or a cashback card used through Neobanc — can beat the Cobalt on rent alone. Many people keep the Cobalt for food and a second card for rent.

FAQ

Common questions

No. 5x applies to eligible food and grocery purchases. Rent paid through a platform earns the base 1 point per dollar.

Very few Canadian landlords accept credit cards directly. Platforms such as Chexy charge your card and send the payment to your landlord by e-Transfer or cheque.

On its own it's close to break-even. It becomes worthwhile when you need the spend for the welcome bonus, redeem points for travel, or a promotion lowers the fee.
