How We Review & Rank Platforms

Editorially independentNo paid placementsNet value after feesUpdated Jun 2026

PaySmarter.ca is an independent Canadian platform for optimizing recurring payments and credit card rewards. We rank rent payment platforms and credit cards on real-world value to Canadians — not on affiliate economics.

How we evaluate rent payment platforms

Each platform is scored on six axes:

  • Net cost after rewards. Platform fee minus the rewards earned by the typical Canadian credit card.
  • Card and network coverage. Visa, Mastercard, Amex acceptance — and which cards unlock the lowest fee tier.
  • Payment types supported. Rent, bills, mortgage, tuition, property tax, credit cards.
  • Credit reporting. Whether on-time payments are reported to Equifax and/or TransUnion.
  • Funding routes. Interac e-Transfer, direct debit, credit card — and the cost trade-off of each.
  • Trust signals. FINTRAC registration, CDIC coverage, Canadian support hours, transparency of fees.

How we rank credit cards

Cards are ranked by estimated first-year net value — signup bonus + earned rewards − annual fee, in CAD — combined with recurring-payment optimization, payment-platform compatibility and long-term keeper value. Read the full method on our credit card ranking methodology page, or see how net value is calculated step by step.

Why our recommendations are trustworthy

  • No paid placements. Order is decided by our scoring model — never by which provider pays the most.
  • Net value, not headline value. Advertised "$1,000 bonuses" are adjusted for fees and required spend before ranking.
  • Cross-checked sources. Offers are verified against Great Canadian Rebates, FinlyWealth and CreditCardGenius alongside issuer terms.
  • Updated regularly. Catalogs are re-verified on a set cadence; you'll see "Last updated" labels across the site.

Independence and affiliate disclosure

Some links on this site are referral or affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up through them, at no additional cost to you.

These relationships do not influence how we evaluate or present information. Our goal is to highlight the pros, cons, and trade-offs of each option so you can make an informed decision.

Our Goal

Help Canadians choose the option that returns the most value to them — not the one that pays us the most.
