Tuition Β· Canada Β· Updated 2026-06-23
Tuition is one of the largest single line items most Canadians pay β and one of the easiest places to clear a credit-card minimum spend. The right card turns a $4,000β$8,000 semester into a 50,000-point signup bonus or several hundred dollars of cashback.

Offers cross-checked against Canadian sources (Great Canadian Rebates, FinlyWealth, CreditCardGenius, High Interest Savings, RateHub). We earn a referral fee on some links β it never changes our ranking. Affiliate disclosure.
Estimated first-year values assume typical Canadian spending and realistic point redemptions. Actual rewards vary based on redemption method and individual spending behaviour.
Quick answer
Should I pay Canadian tuition by credit card?
Yes β if your card has an active signup bonus with a $3,000β$5,000 minimum spend, paying tuition by credit card is the fastest, lowest-friction way to clear it. Premium Membership Rewards cards (Amex Platinum, Cobalt) and TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite all produce strong net rewards even after a 2.5% Plastiq-style fee.

Most schools either accept Visa/Mastercard directly with no surcharge or route through a processor like Plastiq (~2.9%) or Flywire. We rank by signup bonus value and minimum-spend efficiency β the cards that turn one tuition payment into a fully-cleared welcome offer.
We re-verify every offer monthly and recalculate estimated first-year value using the current signup bonus, annual fee and a typical Canadian spending profile. See how we review for the full methodology.

FAQ
Some accept Visa/Mastercard directly with no surcharge (UBC, McGill historically). Most route through Plastiq, Flywire, or Convera with a 1.75β2.9% fee. A few only accept EFT/debit.
If you have a signup bonus to clear, use the card with the largest bonus relative to the minimum spend (Amex Platinum, Cobalt, TD First Class Travel). If no bonus, pick a card whose rewards rate exceeds the processor fee β Amex Cobalt at ~5% Membership Rewards clears most 2.9% Plastiq fees comfortably.
Only if you can't pay the statement balance in full. A large tuition charge spikes your utilization for one cycle β pay it off before the statement closes (or pay early) to avoid a temporary score dip.
